Canva DIY business card designs are easy to convert into web header logos and social media profile designs.

Canva is a fantastic DIY tool for small business and entrepreneurs that are comfortable DIY’ing their own images and graphics for their online presence. Most folks who aren’t looking to freelance as a designer use Canva to create anything from logos to social media images. In this tutorial I take a different approach to using Canva; I start by searching through free business card templates grouped in categories. Once I select what I like I can DIY a business card design with a nice looking logo. That becomes the starting point for creating a web header logo, Pinterest cover photo and profile photo, Facebook cover and profile image and Twitter profile. When I approach it in this fashion, all my social media images that represent a brand look in tune. Plus, it takes less time to design and the overall look of each social media image is uniform with the brand identity.

You can watch the video of how I use Canva to DIY a business card design into an amazing unique style. Once complete, small changes can easily recreate it into all the images needed for the various social media channels. I’ve included a transcript of the explanation in the video below.

This is Martha from Design Bliss com. For those of you who are starting to build out a website for your business and you’re struggling, like, what do I use for a logo? You know, what should I do? Should I hire somebody, which I do, I would say, go use Canva Pro, you don’t have to be super-duper graphic designer. And you can find a template that you like very much, I’m going to show you one way of doing it. Now, Canva has templates for everything. You’ll see them for logos; you’ll see them for business cards, I’m going to show you how to do it with a business card. It’s a little different approach. But I like doing it this way. Because once I make my business card, I can take that business card and retrofit it to my website and all my social media. And it all looks the same. So I’m going to use the business card templates. And when you click on business card templates, versus typing it up here, you actually get the categories which I really like. So I have a fictitious website is called coffee barista; I’ve had this domain name for a very long time. I’ve never built out a website. I’m going to do some videos on how to make one.

And because I’ve never used this domain, I’m going to use it for this demo. So I’m going to click on the catering because coffee, catering food kind of the same. And I’ll go in here and pick something on like.

Let’s go back just to business cards for a second. There’s 2700 business cards. If you had to look through all those, you’d go nuts. That’s why I like these categories. So we’re going to go back to catering. And now we’re only looking at 21. Twenty-one templates that are related to sort of food and catering and such. So even there is a coffee house template, but I don’t want to use that. So I’m going to look a little more. I kind of like this one right here.

Coffee, it’s black and white. I like that; I’m going to use that. And I’m going to make some changes. So the first change I’m going to make is I want to change this little icon. And I’m going to go over to the elements. And I am going to find this coffee mug that I saw earlier. And I’m just going to replace that element with the coffee mug. But I’m going to make a little smaller because you’ll notice that when I click on this guy, there’s a lot of space around the edges. That’s what principle of design is called negative space, you give yourself some room so things don’t look cluttered. So I want to make my item up about the same size to fit in that square, I’m going to move it to the back and delete this image. So now I just have my little coffee thing. Now I could change these

fonts. And one of the things I could do, you’ll notice I have a fat kind of a fat font here and a very thin font. And that’s, that’s what’s called complimentary fonts. And I could change those fonts, I could exchange this fat font for a different one and see if I liked it better like playfair display black. Maybe Maybe I decided I like that better APR fat face or any of the other fat fonts that I have. And below this video, I have a link to my font cheat sheet which is 105 fonts that you can get the TTL files and then upload them in Canva if you would like extra fonts.

I’ll put the name here, coffee barrista and then I’m going to give it a little descriptive subtitle. And really, all I want to do is make one more change which is the colors. I at one point used this theme which is nice theme but I don’t use it anymore. But I like the red in it, so I’m going to go get that color.

And I’m going to make that change here. Now I actually saved that color in this brand kit set of colors in this palette. So I can just go in there and click on it. Add it. And if you don’t know where your brand kit is, I’ll show you in a second. So I want to change the title. So I know what it is, it’s going to be my coffee barista business card.

Now that I have that, I can print that out through Canva, they’ll send them to me in the mail, I’ll get them in about a week. Or I can download it as a high quality PDF print file onto a flash drive and go to Office Depot and get it printed out. So either way, you can do that, but I’ve saved it. And now I’m going to take it and I’m going to take this, this layout; actually, I forgot, I need to change the second page, which is super easy, I might add in the name barrista owner. And you can see you can go in here and add in your your website name; I could add this coffee barista in here. And I can copy and paste which is super fast. I’m not going to do at all because it’s all fake anyway, but I’ll just show you that I can do it.

And that’s what makes Canva so powerful. So I just go in and change all these and then print it out anyway. So I’ve got this, and I’m done with it. I’ve printed it out, I got my business cards. And now I’m going to make a

So it’s almost three to one; it depends on your website and how big your web header, you know how tall it is. So you can play with it. But with this copy and resize it, it’s a breeze. So it doesn’t really matter what dimensions I pick, because I can always change it. I don’t need the second page. But I do want to rearrange this because I want it to be big enough that it’s readable. So I’m going to make my little icon a little bigger. And then this piece,

And here I’m not leaving as much negative space as I did. You’ll notice I leave a lot the same amount on either side. But this is going to go in a logo header. So it’s gonna go on a wider area than what I have. So I’m going to have more gap on the top and the bottom than I currently have with this. So I can kind of bring it closer to the edges. And if I really thought this was too small, when I got it on my logo header, I would get rid of the accent. And I would make it even bigger, but I’m going to leave it as is because I really liked the way that looks. And I’m going to call this web logo.

Get rid of the copy of. And again, in this case, I would download it as either a PNG or jpg, and I’m done. I’ve got my business card, I’ve got my logo header. And now I actually need to make some social media images from the business card that I’m going to use on my social media accounts. So the first one would be my Pinterest account. Now this is my real account. And you’ll notice you have this cover photo, and then a profile photo for Pinterest. And this profile photo for Pinterest is about 165 pixels by 165 pixels. So it’s super small. This I’ve seen where they googled it and they said something like 1920 by 1080, which is really large. But again, if you don’t like the way it turns out, you just resize it and it’s a 16 to nine ratio. So let’s go back into the business card and go ahead and make this cover for coffee barista. I’m going to go to resize. I’m going to go to pixels. I’m going to put in my 1920 by 1080 tall I’m going to hit copy and resize. I’m going to actually rename that. So I know what it is when I come back to it later on

Pinterest cover. And I’m not going to leave it like this because Pinterest is a little different than some other channels, I want to make it really bright and cheery. So I’m going to get rid of the black, which is going to kind of mess it up for a minute, but I’m going to go get a good photo. And I found this photo of these coffee mugs. And I’ll tell you, when you hover over this and it says Pro, that means as a Canva pro subscriber, you can use it, but if you are using the free version, you would pay for it. So I’m going to add that in. And I can I can changes and crop it and do whatever I want to. But I’ll start right there. And I’ll pull it up to the top and out to the sides.

And it’s a really nice background, except I kind of lost my, my… I’m going to get those cups in there like that. But it makes a really nice background for the lettering. So I’m going to go ahead and
move it back, which is going to somewhat crop it. And I don’t need this coffee cup. Because I’ve got these here, it’s just sort of extraneous, so I’m going to get rid of it. And I’ll move this up right on top of those mugs. But you’ll notice that the letters don’t stand out. So I’ve got to reverse the coloring. I’m going to go in here to my my colors.

And I’m done. That’s it. So I took this, converted it to a Pinterest cover. And remember, I need this little profile. And I want to make it readable. So I’m going to make it super simple. Okay, so we have the business card, we have the logo for the website header or what I call the logo header, we have the Pinterest cover. And if you remember the next thing we have to do is create that little profile photo which is 165 pixels wide by 165. So we’ll go back to the business card, we’ll use that. We’ll resize it – make it a square to start with. So let’s make it 165 by 165 Pinterest profile. And the beauty of this is once you make a Pinterest profile, your Twitter profile cover and your Facebook photo cover I think it’s called – I don’t know which one is the small one for Facebook.

you know, this is dark to begin with. I think what I do, just to make it easy; I would start with a circle so I know where my boundaries are, drag this out to the edge like that. And remember, on this one, all of this stuff outside the circle is not going to show. So you have two choices. You can make that transparent or you can leave it color, and it just won’t show – it doesn’t really matter. But if I make this black and out of my kit, you can see that it’s a little different than the background. So let’s get rid of the background.

Oops.Let’s redo that. My mistake. That’s the beauty of being able to back out of that. And we’ll put it back so we can see where the circle is. Send that to the back below the other item. And you know, I could leave this like it is, but then it would look very similar to the cover and there might not, you know, that might look okay. Leave this, like this, It’s too close to the edge; we need some negative space.

So we could do that. So that might work, except I think it’s gonna be really so small; because remember, this is going to be small, and it’s gonna be hard to read. So while it looks good here, I don’t think it actually looked good sitting as a small circle down here. Because remember, it’s gonna be about covering that little handle.Except again, the second I do that it’s not going to show. So that means it probably won’t work at all, ‘caz won’t be seen. Oh, I didn’t want to do that on the Pinterest account.

And I want some negative space. So I’m going to give myself some space here and bring it down. Because again, I want to leave, you know, I want to make it readable, but I also want to leave some room.

And let’s put this on multiple lines and make it interesting.Make it a little bit bigger so that it’s readable. Still, because remember, it’s going to be a very small circle. I’ll leave the, the cup. And we’ll bring that down and then make it as big as we can within the circle without getting it too cluttery.

And I’m going to do one more thing, I want to add in a little bit of an accent. So add out four spaces. And we’re going to add in an accent. So let’s find something that will work. That looks really nice. And we’ll bring it down just a little more. So we have some
to make that a little bit smaller recreate it for Twitter. And as I said Facebook so I’ll get rid of this and we’ll save this. And let’s see, what is the Twitter let’s see what Facebook is – Facebook cover size, Facebook profile size profile size is 170. So it’s literally the same size as Pinterest. So I could just resize this on the fly. Instead of 165, I could make it 170, and I’d be done. And the cover, let’s see what the cover picture is – cover picture size. Here it says a 851 by 315. And I’ve heard of that size Facebook cover, that’s 2020 that looks newer. So I would go back to the Pinterest, I would go back to this one. Because remember, we’re kind of using this.

Anyway, I would go back to this resize it, make it what they say 815 851 by 315. Copy and resize it. I can I don’t need that page. I’m gonna bring this out a bit. Maybe make that just slightly larger. Just a little bit, bring it back down on to the mugs. And there’s my Facebook cover. So all of these things I’ve made within minutes. It’s not been terribly hard. And I started with a business card. So there’s my business card. Remember the front and the back. There’s my logo for my website, the header at the top. There’s my Pinterest profile our cover photo with the Pinterest profile photo that goes at the bottom of it, which I made into a Twitter profile, which also goes into a Facebook profile. And then I took the Pinterest cover and made it into a Facebook cover and I did this all in less than like 20 30 minutes. That’s how easy you can do that just starting with a business card in Canva. Thanks for watching.
